MISSION
At Second Stage, we create and champion plays and musicals solely from living American writers. On our mainstage Broadway theater, the Hayes, and in our Off-Broadway theaters over the past 47 years, we have developed and presented over 200 daring and provocative theatrical experiences by working with countless artists who have contributed their talents to our award-winning productions. As the only Broadway company exclusively devoted to living American writers Second Stage is dedicated to introducing the world to bold and diverse voices of American creativity.
HISTORY
Since 1979, Second Stage Theater has been working to nurture and champion plays and musicals by living American playwrights. Each season, we welcome over 125,000 audience members and employ over 250 artists. Our programs are a springboard for artists and works such as Lynn Nottage’s Clyde’s, Larissa FastHorse’s The Thanksgiving Play, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate and Purpose, and Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Steven Levenson’s Dear Evan Hansen among many others. As an organization dedicated to expanding the American theater canon, our mission has a ripple effect that reaches the tri-state area, regional theatres, and the country.
In synergy with our productions, we also act as a greenhouse for new work through developmental workshops, readings, and a series of initiatives dedicated to nurturing new work. Alongside these programs, our Education and Community Engagement initiatives reach over 10,000 people via student matinees, free and subsidized tickets, performances with accommodations for people with disabilities, and community partnerships.
